About

Welcome to Cura, an anthology dedicated to collecting the reflections of residents participating in a Narrative Medicine elective.

Medicine is as much an art as it is a science. While clinical practice demands precision, data, and evidence, the lived experience of being a physician—the human side of medicine—requires empathy, introspection, and connection. This duality often leaves little room for reflection amidst the demands of long hours, complex cases, and the emotional weight of patient care. Yet, it is precisely in the act of reflection that physicians can find meaning, resilience, and a deeper understanding of their work.

The reflections in this anthology come from resident physicians participating in a narrative medicine elective, a space dedicated to exploring the intersection of storytelling and healing. Through writing, discussion, and shared vulnerability, these residents have paused to examine the moments that stay with them: the patients who challenge and inspire them, the questions that linger after the workday ends, and the ways their personal lives intertwine with their professional roles.

Reflection is not a luxury in medicine—it is a necessity. It allows physicians to process their experiences, honor their patients' stories, and grow as compassionate caregivers. The practice of narrative medicine fosters self-awareness, strengthens empathy, and reminds us of the profound privilege and responsibility inherent in caring for others.

This collection offers a glimpse into the hearts and minds of those in the early stages of their medical careers. It celebrates their growth, honors their humanity, and invites readers to see the world through their eyes. These stories, essays, and musings reflect not only the challenges and triumphs of residency but also the enduring importance of storytelling in the practice of medicine.
